I saw a commercial on TV recently where a
homeowner is lying with his head in the cupboard
trying to fix his sink. His young son walks up and
says “Hey Dad, want some help?” Without pausing
the dad says, “No, this is a grownup job.”
The boy begins to walk away, dejected. After pausing
for a moment, the father says “You want to hold the
flashlight?” The closing shot is of the boy and the
father both lying with their heads in the cupboard
happily fixing the sink together.
I can’t remember what the commercial was supposed
to be selling. For me, it was selling yoga.
The man took a deep breath and realized the truth of
his situation. It was not about keeping his house in
good working order; it was about keeping his
home in good working order.
This is what yoga can help us do -- see rightly and act
accordingly.
In the Wedding journey, yoga helps you see:
It’s not about whether you have the perfect wedding;
it’s about opening to your actual experience. Honoring
the joys as well as the griefs and living into
them fully.
It’s not about winning the fight with your parents over
guest lists or menu choices; it’s about managing the
transformation of your family relationships so that they
come out stronger in the end.
It’s not about the choices you make for
the gift registry, the seating arrangements or the
music; it’s that you learn to make decisions that are
true to yourself and your partner.
It’s not about getting every task done on the to do list;
it’s about staying present in the moment so in the
midst of the busy-ness you can drink in the delight
and remember it for a long time.
It is not about maintaining cool composure or a sense
of decorum on your Big Day; it’s about allowing
yourself to drink in the loving attention and if that
brings tears, so be it.
Most importantly, yoga helps you see that the wedding
is more than a party; it is a rite of passage that
transforms you and your families. Yoga helps you live
into this transformation fully and gracefully so that you
create a firm foundation for your marriage.
Ok, enough of the soapbox! Try it – the link is to the
right.
